Accommodation in Historic WindsorThe best way to experience the history and heritage of Windsor is to stay for the night. As the Mall comes alive with local families and couples, you too can spend a pleasant evening in the many cafés and restaurants. You’ll also find first-rate live entertainment at several pubs on George Street. When the shops have closed and day-trippers have gone, historic Windsor belongs to you. Take a late-night stroll through Thompson Square and you’ll immediately sense the area’s rich heritage. The quiet of this village will never be as it was a century ago, but Windsor, as it begins to stir, is quite magical. And when you wake up, you can enjoy an early morning walk along the ancient river, followed by a coffee and pastry in the company of other early risers.
Accommodation in the Hawkesbury and nearby shires ranges from budget motels to upmarket resorts, but options are limited, so we suggest making reservations ahead. Several bed and breakfasts are situated just outside Windsor. Unusual, and often in exotic surroundings, we list them under Hawkesbury Escapes. Hawkesbury EscapesThere are many luxurious and secluded valley, mountain and river retreats hidden away in the Hawkesbury region. Most are less than 30 minutes from Windsor. With so many unique styles you are sure to find something that will suit your accommodation tastes and needs. Tizzana Bed & BreakfastAddress: 518 Tizzana Road, Ebenezer The luxurious Tizzana Winery Bed & Breakfast is just 15 minutes from Windsor. Situated on a winding road through rural horse and wine country, this 5-star bed and breakfast overlooking a lily farm is just “what the doctor ordered”. Built by Dr Thomas Fiaschi (c. 1887), the original building burnt down in 1955, leaving only a stone shell. Today, after much painstaking and back-breaking work, this National Trust-listed building houses a winery and upstairs, a very fashionable B&B. Peter and Carolyn Auld have designed a most unusual arrangement; if you wish, you can plan your stay with an intimate dinner for a special occasion. A gay-friendly establishment, Tizzana’s setting is stylish and relaxing, truly a touch of Tuscany in the Hawkesbury. Hawkesbury Race Club MotelAddress: Hawkesbury Race Club, Clarendon Within walking distance of the race course, this brand new Hawkesbury getaway provides all the amenities you could expect. Rooms are spacious – some with complete kitchen – while the décor and colours are restful and relaxing. The motel has two distinct wings, each offering an attractive view. A small restaurant adjacent to reception is a terrific setting for an intimate party of friends after a day at the races.
