Are sore muscles a bother? Wet, cold, tired and irritated? Certainly, paddling a canoe 111 kilometres overnight can bring on all these symptoms, but finishing those last painful strokes at daybreak is a thriller. A full moon or miserable rain – there’s no guarantee of a perfect night. Yet you are guaranteed a memorable night. The race starts at Windsor where there are many small beaches and you can stop for a stretch or toilet break. As you make your way down the Hawkesbury River, beaches are gradually replaced by sandstone cliffs. Some paddlers liken these to the walls of the Rhine in Germany. Many paddlers are in it for the competition, but others are simply moderately fit participants who enjoy the challenge and the incredible exhilarating side effects. In its 26-year history, paddlers have raised more than $1.6 million for medical research. Not a bad record for a bunch of canoe crazies! New South Wales Water Ski Classic - NovemberAddress: Governor Phillip Park, Windsor The Bridge to Bridge Water Ski Classic is well known to competitors nationally and internationally. The Hawkesbury adventure begins at Dangar Island in Broken Bay and proceeds along the length of the Hawkesbury River, finishing in Windsor’s Governor Phillip Park. This race isn’t limited to thrill seekers; this is a race for families and ordinary, fun-loving, once-a-year skiers. The excited and welcoming Windsor crowd cheers as each skier rounds the final bend. It’s a trip! » SummerMacquarie Proclamation Celebration - 2010Date: 1st Sunday in December Hollands Paddock behind Windsor Riverview Shopping Centre Each year, the Windsor Business Group honours Macquarie’s Proclamation Day for the public. In 2010, the event will be held in Hollands Paddock behind Windsor Riverview Shopping Centre. Canons boom, soldiers stand at-arms, a drum and fife corps marches to a solemn drum roll. Colonial men and women make camp high above the river in Thompson Square, cook, forge iron and bring to life a day as lived in 1810. Dignitaries along with the governor and his wife arrive at the ceremony in elegant carriages drawn by massive bedecked Clydesdales. Macquarie delivers his welcoming and fervent speech: "… the colony depends upon you." On a summer day, Governor Lachlan Macquarie at the Government House in Windsor named the five Hawkesbury towns: Richmond, Windsor, Wilberforce, Pitt Town and Castlereagh. All were situated on a high elevation, somewhat protected from the flooding Hawkesbury. Witness a re-enactment and a commemoration of the naming of the Hawkesbury towns in 1810. This year, the the celebration – the 200th – is certain to be an exciting one. Carols in the Park 2010Date: December 11 The 2010 annual Windsor Riverview Carols in the Park, like 2009, will be a wonderful event for singles, couples and families. The entertainment is varied with a terrific master of ceremonies, musicians, dancers and comedians on a large stage and a large crowd across Windsor Riverview Park (at the rear of shopping centre) ready and willing to sing. Bring your picnic baskets or purchase dinner at the food court - the festivities begin while the sun is shining and continue into the evening. » AutumnThe Hawkesbury ShowAddress: Hawkesbury Showground, Racecourse Road, Clarendon This event is an annual autumn happening at the Hawkesbury Showground. With more than 124 years of history, the show always opens on Friday night. Spectacular ring entertainment, lively music and exciting fireworks will make for a great family activity. Yet, the Show is more than entertainment. It is where Hawkesbury families meet and greet - a Hawkesbury community event at its best - and visitors are welcomed like members of an extended family while celebrating the district's long heritage.
Judging of magnificent livestock is no easy task with such impressive animals! Fruit and vegetable displays bring out the farmer in all of us, and the mouth-watering cooking exhibitions in the grand pavilion are a highlight. These agri-activities and some of the families participating date back to the Hawkesbury's early days - great, great, great-grandfathers and grandmothers have attended. Remember, this is the 121st show! Back to the entertainment: the intra-state wood chopping competition has the crowd on its feet. But it is the spectacle of regal participants in the pony and horse exhibitions that pack them in. The heart-stopping rides, the carnival atmosphere and the brilliant fireworks are the pinnacle of a great family weekend in the Hawkesbury. Free parking available on the Hawkesbury Showground. Bridge to Bridge Power Boat RaceAddress: Governor Phillip Park, Windsor
In May, the Upper Hawkesbury Power Boat Club holds its Bridge to Bridge race, a course of 68 kilometres. The starting point is Brooklyn and approximately 150 very fast boats join the race. Register on the Upper Hawkesbury Power Boat Club website. If you're not racing, come join the crowd for the welcoming party at the Governor Phillip Park along the river's edge on George Street in Windsor.
